Cong goes gung-ho
DH News Service, New Delhi:

With the Nuclear Suppliers’ Group (NSG) finally granting India the much-awaited waiver, Congress now seems all set to go gung-ho over the India-US nuke deal ahead of the next Lok Sabha (LS) elections.

All India Congress Committee (AICC) headquarters at 24 Akbar Road here went into celebration mode, as jubilant party workers gathered from across the Capital to burst firecrackers and shout slogans welcoming the waiver from the NSG and, off course, hailing Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and party president Sonia Gandhi.

Congress termed the waiver as “a great and historic victory for the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government as well as for the people of the country”. “It is a red letter day for India,” said AICC spokesman Manish Tiwari.
The waiver from the 45-nation bloc that controls global nuke commerce has paved the way for operationalisation of the India-US deal, on which the Congress-led UPA has invested much of its political future.

While the Left Front and BJP almost echoed each other to oppose the nuclear agreement  and raised pitch day by day, the Congress celebrated each milestone the Government crossed towards operationalising the deal, be it the victory in the trust vote or the endorsement from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to the safeguard agreement.
