13 new cases push Nagaland's Covid-19 tally to 11,890
Nagaland's Covid-19 caseload rose to 11,890 on Thursday as 13 more people tested positive for the infection, Health Minister S Pangnyu Phom said.
Of the fresh cases, six were reported from Dimapur, five from Kohima and two from Mokokchung, he said.
Eighty-three people were cured of the disease in the last 24 hours, pushing the recovery rate among coronavirus patients in the state to an all-time high of 95.68 per cent, the official said.
3 more UK passengers test positive for Covid-19 in Bengaluru
Three additional passengers who had flown into the city from the United Kingdom tested positive for the novel coronavirus on Thursday. This increases the number of infected among the fliers to six.
An official of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) said that the three are residents of Mahadevapura.

Punjab's death toll due to Covid-19 climbed to 5,260 on Thursday as the state recorded 17 more fatalities, while the caseload surged to 1,64,505 with 373 fresh infections, according to a medical bulletin.
There are 4,812 active cases in the state, the bulletin stated.
Mohali reported 75 new cases, Jalandhar 57 and Pathankot 41, among other districts.
Karnataka Minister defends decision on reopening of schools
Defending the decision to reopen schools from January 1, Karnataka Primary and Secondary Education Minister S Suresh Kumar on Thursday said the issue pertained to the future of the children and not a prestige issue for the government.
His assertion came on a day when ruling BJP legislator A H Vishwanath came out against the decision to reopen the schools, which have remained shut since the Covid-19 lockdown in March, saying the children should not be put to risk in the pandemic time.
"I am making it very clear that reopening schools is not a matter of a prestige issue of our government. It's a subject pertaining to the future of the children and our commitment towards them," Kumar told reporters here.
UK returnees test Covid-19 positive in Telangana, hospitalised
Seven people who returned here recently from the UK tested positive for Covid-19 and their swab samples have been sent for screening to ascertain if they carry the new variant of the coronavirus detected there, a senior Telangana Health official said on Thursday.
The seven have been admitted to hospitals and are being monitored continuously, Public Health Director G Srinivas Rao said. We have found seven persons who returned from the UK during the past two weeks to be positive for the coronavirus.
Gujarat records 990 Covid-19 cases, 1,181 recoveries; 8 die
Gujarat recorded 990 new coronavirus cases, taking it tally to 2,39,195 on Thursday, while eight more patients succumbed to the viral infection, said the state Health Department.
With the addition of 990 new cases, Gujarat's Covid-19 count reached 2,39,195, while the death toll increased to 4,262, said release by the department.
Also, 1,181 Covid-19 patients recovered from the infection and discharged from hospitals during the last 24 hours, it said.
3,580 new Covid-19 cases in Maharashtra, 89 deaths, 3,171 recoveries
Maharashtra's Covid-19 tally rose to 19,09,951 on Thursday as it recorded 3,580 new cases, a health official said.
The state reported 89 fatalities during the day which took the death toll to 49,058, he said.
A total of 3,171 patients were discharged after treatment, taking the tally of recovered people to 18,04,871.
The number of active patients in the state now is 54,891.
Mumbai city reported 643 new cases during the day, which pushed its overall case count to 2,89,204, while its death toll rose to 11,045 with 12 more fatalities being reported.
Another new coronavirus variant found in Nigeria, says Africa CDC
Another new variant of the novel coronavirus seems to have emerged in Nigeria, the head of Africa's disease control body said on Thursday, cautioning more investigation was needed.
The news comes after Britain and South Africa both reported new variants of the SARS-CoV-2 virus that appear to be more contagious, leading to new travel restrictions and turmoil in markets.
"It's a separate lineage from the UK and the South African lineages," John Nkengasong, director of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) told an online news conference from Addis Ababa.

The Delhi High Court on Thursday said it was "inhumane" to keep thousands of ICU beds reserved in private hospitals for Covid-19 patients when the positivity rate of the infection and number of coronavirus cases was going down in the national capital.
Justice Navin Chawla said that in the prevailing situation today keeping so many ICU beds reserved for Covid-19 patients "cannot be sustained" and if in future there was an increase in Covid-19 cases, then the reservations can be brought back.
Karnataka withdraws night curfew order
In a U-turn, the Karnataka government on Thursday withdrew its night curfew order, hours before it was to comment into effect.
The decision to impose night curfew for nine days from 11 pm to 5 am starting from Thursday was taken on Wednesday in line with the Centre's advice, amid concerns over a new Covid-19 variant spreading in the UK.

Punjab: 216 people who arrived from UK to be institutionally quarantined
As many as 216 people who arrived here from the UK in a December 22 flight will be institutionally quarantined as they might have come in contact with seven of their fellow passengers and a crew member who tested Covid-19 positive on arrival, health officials said on Thursday.
They are from different places, including Amritsar, and are being taken from their homes to institutional quarantine centres, they said.

The total Covid-19 cases in Andhra Pradesh crossed the 8.80 lakh mark on Thursday with 357 more people testing positive for the infection.
After a sum of 1.14 crore sample tests, 8,80,075 turned positive for coronavirus at an overall positivity rate of 7.67 per cent, the latest government bulletin said. The total recoveries increased to 8,69,124 as 355 patients got cured in 24 hours ending 9 am on Thursday.
