The 27-year-old man, identified only as GS, got drunk and used a knife to slit his throat, a newspaper report said. However, he was saved by his friends who saw him on time and took him to a hospital, where he was treated.
"This man arrived in hospital with his neck bleeding after his attempt to slaughter himself...his neck vein was slightly cut," Dr Rabei Mukhtar of Saqr Hospital at the Ras Al Khaimah emirate told Arabic daily Emarat Al Youm.
The paper said police would detain the man pending trial, adding that he could be either jailed for six months or fined Rs 62,000 (5,000 dirhams) for attempted suicide. The paper quoted the Indian as saying he had decided to kill himself because his girlfriend's family refused his proposal on grounds that he did not have enough money.
"They forced her to marry a man who has money although I have known her for more than six years," he said.
