Death lurked while buying vegetables

A huge coconut tree collapses on a woman killing her instantly at Gokulam in city

The fifty-year-old Jayalakshmi, is the wife of S V Raghunath, employed with South Western Railways, Mysore.

The incident occurred right outside her house at fifth cross, first stage, Gokulam here around 9.30 am.

The vegetable vendor, later identified as Shivanna, had a miraculous escape. The tall coconut tree stood in front of Jayalakshmi’s landlord Vasanthamma’s house, who lived right next door.

Jayalakshmi who suffered grievous head injuries was immediately rushed to a private hospital, where the doctor declared her brought dead.

According to an eyewitness, the electric wire snapped along with the tree thus impeding chances of rescuing the lady. It was only after sometime, the people who had gathered at the spot, could muster courage to go near the lady who was bleeding profusely, and take her to the hospital.

Raghunath ran out hearing the noise, the tree created as it came crashing down, was shell shocked. The couple’s daughters Vatsala and Rajalakshmi were inconsolable.

Vatsala, the eldest among the two is employed with a motor factory at Hebbal Industrial Area, while Rajalakshmi was working at Mata Amruthanandamayi School at Bogadi. Vatsala’s marriage was scheduled to be held in the month of May.

The body was handed over to the relatives after autopsy.

V V Puram Police have registered a case.

Lady robbed

In an incident that happened in the broad daylight, an elderly woman was robbed of her gold chains worth about  ` 40,000 by two strangers here on Tuesday.

Lakshmamma (65), a resident K G Koppal here was waiting for a bus when she was approached by a strange woman. The latter asked Lakshmamma about the currency notes found strewn on the road.

Though Lakshmamma replied in negative, the lady insisted that it was indeed Lakshmamma’s.

Taking advantage of Lakshmamma’s innocence, the lady offered to swear on Lakshmamma’s ‘mangalsutra’ along with another chain.

Just then a man joined in and added to the confusion further. Before Lakshmamma realised she was being tricked, the lady said she would be tying the valuables to the end of Lakshmamma’s saree and disappeared in no time.

When Lakshmamma untied the knot, after walking a distance, all she could find was stones inside.

Saraswathipuram Police have registered a case and are investigating.
