Replying on behalf of the chief minister to a question tabled by S R Leela Rao and M Srinivas (BJP) in the Legislative Council on Thursday, Bommai said filtered sand contained clay and should not be used for constructing buildings.

Building collapse

Leela Rao expressed concern over the increasing incidents of private buildings under construction collapsing, and fire accidents in Bangalore City. She sought to know what action the government had taken against builders and contractors who did a shoddy job.

Innocent construction workers were getting killed and no one was penalised, she said.
She cited the CK Palya incident on Bannerghatta Road where five construction workers died after a structure under construction collapsed. In such cases, the government ended up paying compensation to the victims’ families but the builders, structural engineers and contractors escaped punishment or penalty, she argued.

Referring to the Chaitanya building collapse at Whitefield, Bommai said a first information report had been filed against those responsible for the mishap.

Surprisingly, in a written reply, the government has stated that in the last three years, only one building in the City had collapsed during construction.
