Virani rues Aruna will not benefit

Virani has written a book on Aruna Shanbaug and she moved the petition for euthanasia stating that Aruna was being forced to live her life stipped of basic dignity.

The SC praised Virani’s concern, but ruled that her relationship with the patient does not give her right to petition on Aruna Shanbaug’s behalf for a mercy killing.

“It is true that I am not a close relative of Aruna to decide on the issue, but I want to ask every Indian whether anyone of them would like to live like Aruna even for a day. The irony of today’s verdict is that while the SC has allowed passive euthanasia due to Aruna’s case, the person who is the cause of the verdict will be denied recourse to it,” she rued.

Because of this case, the SC has permitted passive euthanasia, which means that Aruna Shanbaug’s state will worsen with persistent diarrhoea as her body cannot handle much of that being put through the pipe. But, because of this woman, no other person in a similar position will have to suffer for more than three-and-a-half decades, Virani said.
