As the work on the drinking water component under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (Jn-nurm) progresses in a snail’s pace, Minister for Medical Education and District In-charge S A Ramdas said the Kapila water will be made available to the city within a year.
“The phase I work of drawing water from Kabini is likely to be completed in one year, catering for about 60 mld of water to city. The work on Jackwell Intake and the pipeline laying work is being implemented simultaneously. The jackwell project being executed on the side of Kabini left bank near Doora village in Mysore taluk will draw water from the Kapila River,” he said.
Talking to reporters after a inspection of the works done under the water supply scheme, the minister said the work on the project was delayed owing to hurdles in the land acquisition process. Now all the decks are cleared and the work on jackwell and pipeline project will be completed soon.
About 35 kilometers of pipeline have already been laid connecting to city. The Phase I of the Rs 108 crore project entails for hydraulic pressure in the pipelines which can support the sustenance of pressure in water supply to the taps for the end users.
The water from Kabini right bank Canal would also be pumped through six pumps under hydraulic pressure, he said.
The Kabini project proposes for drawing a total of180 mld of water from Kapila River when the IInd phase of the work gets completed.
Two phases
The two phase project covers various parts of he city. If the first phase would cater to the eastern and southern parts of the city like Vidyaranyapuram, J P Nagar, Kuvempunagar, T K Layout, Ramakrishnanagar and parts of Vijayanagar, the IInd phase would cater for the new layouts like R T Nagar and others.
Compensation for ryots
On the compensation to ryots whose land are acquired for the jackwell project, Ramdas said the government has released Rs 1.49 crore towards the compensation.
He assured that the farmers would receive the money soon.
Kempegowda, a farmer alleged that the government failed to pay the compensation to eight farmers who parted their land more than three years back.
“We are still waiting for the compensation. The government lacked courtesy to atleast compensate the loss accumulated due to stoppage of the tilling our land. We will not allow the work on the jackwell project if the administration failed to compensate the farmers by the end of this month,” he told media persons and the Minister.
Mayor Pushpalatha Chikkanna, Mysore City Corporation Commissioner K S Raykar, Superintendent Engineer of MCC Suresh Babu, VVWW Executive Engineer Subramanyam, Executive Engineer of Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Sewerage Board Subbe Gowda and others accompanied the Minister.
