Residents stage protest against Excel Plant

Cutting across party lines, a group of leaders along with prominent residents staged a protest demanding the shifting of Excel Plant (waste treatment unit) at Sewage Farm in Vidyaranyapuram, in the city on Wednesday.

The protesters including women, led by former MLA M K Somashekar under the banner of ‘Excel Plant Virodhi Horata Samiti’ (Committee against excel plant) alleged that the people in the surrounding areas are put into hardship owing to the nauseating smell emerging from the plant, for the past four years.

Though the plant commissioned several years ago, the situation aggravated recently with the foul smell. The MCC authorities have been sitting on the demands of the residents to initiate measures to mitigate the woes.

The protesters warned of intensifying their stir, if the civic body failed to act at the earliest.

Congress Corporator B L Bhyrappa, BJP Corporator Asha B H, District Co-operative Union President H V Rajiv were prominent among those who participated in the protest.
