<p>According to sources, the Union had been “negligent” in checking discharge of untreated effluents to a drain thus causing air and water pollution. <br /><br />“The Union has not responded to the notices issued by the Board. Hence we have recommended further action according to law,” B Rudresh, Environment Officer, told Deccan Herald. <br /><br />According to the report of the Board, water used for production is not being discharged in a scientific manner. A foul smell engulfs the Union premises on Dharwad Road since untreated water is being let into the drain. <br /><br />Public using the road had approached the Pollution Control Board seeking measures to check air pollution.<br /><br />According to environment officers, the untreated effluent reaches the Navalur tank through drains. They said though a water treatment plant has been set up at the production unit, there are no technical staff to maintain the plant.<br /><br />Earlier, the Board had directed the Milk Federation to raise the height of the chimneys at the production unit to 38 metre. The unit had coal-fired boilers with chimneys of 30-metre height. The problem was resolved as the boilers were shifted to LPG.</p>
