On Jul 1, the Rajya Sabha MP on behalf of People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) had wrote to former Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh saying 'Jallikattu' violates the spirit of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 which prohibits beating animals, kicking them and causing them unnecessary pain or suffering.

The Ministry then issued a notification in The Gazette of India dated July 11 stating that bulls can no longer be used as performing animals.

"I am really overwhelmed that the bulls will no longer have to be part of this sport anymore. My special thanks to the government and to all the concerned citizens who helped us in achieving this victory for animals," Malini said in a statement.

As per the notification issued by the central government, animals like bears, monkeys, tigers, panthers, lions and bulls shall not be exhibited or trained as performing animals.
