<p>The state started releasing over 12,000 cusec water into the river Cauvery from Tuesday morning.<br /><br />The release commenced a day after Tamil Nadu PWD Secretary Ramasubramanian said that the State had to make good a shortfall of 20 tmc of Cauvery water this year.<br />According to sources, the water was being released from two gates into the river following instructions from the State Government. <br /><br />However, a senior official of the Cauvery Neeravari Nigam Limited claimed that water was not released from the reservoir to Tamil Nadu. They were only releasing excess water into the river as they should not impound water beyond 123 ft (maximum level 124.80 ft).<br /><br />Unhappy<br />Meanwhile, farmers are unhappy over the release of water. They pointed out that the dam still required two tmc of water to reach the full level. <br /><br />Agitation<br />"While the farmers in the State are struggling to save their summer crops, the government is releasing water to Tamil Nadu. The farmers would launch an agitation if the government did not stop the release of water," farmers' leaders K S Nanjundegowda and Konasale Narasaraju warned.</p>
