The High Court on Monday ordered notices to the State government, BBMP and Maverick Holdings and Investment Company in connection with a petition filed after the failure to construct Economically Weaker Section (EWS) quarters.

The petitioners Meena S and 12 others submitted that the State and the BBMP were trying to involve private builders in the hope for joint venture.

Despite the assurances given by the State, no steps had been taken towards the construction of the quarters. As many as 1,512 flats have to be re-allocated, they stated.

Background
The construction of the EWS quarters was taken up by the Government for the welfare of the downtrodden in the year 1983-84.  As many as 42 blocks of three-storey buildings were constructed in three acres of land, housing 36 families in each building.

The project was completed a in record one year and was put up for auction by the Government. Flats were allocated and lease/sale deeds were executed. Occupation was allowed in 1992. However, one of the building blocks collapsed in 2003 and another two blocks collapsed in 2007 resulting in the death of three persons.

Following this, the occupants of the flats were given endorsements promising the re-allocation of flats after the fresh round of construction.  The petitioners alleged that they had already vacated their flats to make way for the demolition and fresh construction. However, no construction work has been taken up so far by Maverick Holdings.
