The long pending demands of the people of Kodagu district to have an ICU unit and dialysis centre at district government hospital will be realised within a month.

The people of Kodagu had to depend on district government hospitals in Mysore and Mangalore to avail the emergency services. There were several instances, where the patient had succumbed to the injuries, before reaching Mangalore or Mysore, owing to lack of ICU facility.

The work on ICU and dialysis centre has been completed and the work on central oxygen system is under progress. The unit will start functioning within a week. The dialysis centre is being set up at an estimated cost of Rs 80 lakh. More than one crore has been spent on the ICU and dialysis centre.

The state government has purchased the instruments required for the ICU and Dialysis centre from Karnataka Drugs and Logistics Centre and sent to the Madikeri district hospital. All the equipments required for the government hospitals are supplied through Karnataka Drugs and Logistics Centre.

The medical officers and nurses have been given training to handle ICU and dialysis centre.

Speaking to Deccan Herald district surgeon Dr K B Mutthappa said the ICU will have six beds. The work on the ICU and installation of machineries have been completed.

It was Deputy Commissioner Dr N V Prasad who showed keen interest in the setting up of the ICU, he added.
