Last Updated 09 May 2015, 19:43 IST

The best of teaching or learning may not always be by physical attendance. Embracing online classrooms, the British Council is launching a series of free Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC) for teachers and learners.

The courses that are on offer are “Understanding IELTS: Techniques for English Language Tests” and “Exploring English: Language and Culture.” The British Council has now opened registrations for both the courses.

According to an official press release, Understanding IELTS is a course that is beneficial for those aspiring for higher education and those looking at global migration. The curriculum of this course will help the learners get a grasp of each stage of the IELTS test which includes reading, writing, speaking and listening.

Candidates opting for the second course on “Exploring English: Language and Culture” will get an opportunity to enhance their English language skills along with knowledge of British culture.

The free online course will be facilitated via FutureLearn. Candidates must be at least 13 years old to create a profile. Parents can register using their own name and then supervise a child throughout the course, the release added.

Both the courses will be for six week duration. While the course on IELTS will begin on May 11, Exploring English will begin on June 22. In a similar attempt, the British Council had conducted a four-week course on “Understanding Language: Learning and Teaching” in April  focusing on exploring English language.

In the earlier Massive Open Online Courses by the British Council, more than four lakh candidates had registered. For further information, visit: www.britishcouncil.in/ educating-world-through-massive-open-online-courses.
