"Anoma Fonseka, the wife of Sarath Fonseka, is becoming the intermediary for the opposition which had stood united during the January 26 Presidential elections," a senior opposition leader said.

"We have not discussed anything about her considering contesting the parliamentary elections if requested in the event of the General not released from detention," the leader said.

The Marxist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) is likely to contest the  April 8 parliamentary elections separately, though the United National Party and other leaders have said all attempts will be made to forge an understanding to prevent splitting of opposition votes.
The JVP Supremo Somawansa Amarasinghe rendered full support to Anoma when she filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking for the former Army Chief's release.
The hearing will come up on Feb 23.

The opposition is mulling a new political alliance to contest the forthcoming general election and some opposition parties have suggested fielding Anoma Fonseka, in the event general Sarath Fonseka is not released before the close of nominations, the weekly Lakbima News reported on Sunday.
