The Bangalore University’s Academic Council had unanimously rejected the admission of the students in January and maintained that a diploma cannot be a degree.

BU Registrar Dr M G Krishnan had recommended that their admissions be approved, but the matter was later rejected at the Academic Council meeting. But the students, armed with a government order from 1995, directing all varsities to consider the three-year diploma course in Business Administration as equivalent to a B Com course, protested against Bangalore University’s stand.

Karna Kumar, one of the affected students from Don Bosco college, said, “the Government Order clearly mentions that the diploma should be considered as a degree but the varsity has repeatedly refused to approve the admissions.”

The students were admitted to colleges affiliated to the university via the PGCET conducted by the VTU. The Governor’s office has also sought an explanation from the VTU on the matter. There are several diploma holders who are either pursuing an MBA or completed in a number of colleges affiliated to the VTU and not the Bangalore University.
