The council of ministers on Wednesday approved a proposal to establish three integrated solid waste management parks near Bengaluru.

The Urban Development department (UDD) has prepared the proposal in order to address the problem of garbage disposal.

Initiatives such as waste-to-energy, waste-to-compost and recycling of waste will be taken up under one roof without causing any environmental pollution in the vicinity, Law Minister T B Jayachandra told reporters after the meeting.

These parks will have high compound walls and buffer zone.  The meeting has given an in-principle approval to the proposal. The UDD will next come up with a detailed project report in this regard. The department is yet to finalise the locations for establishing the parks, he added.

The meeting approved a long-pending proposal to fill select lakes in Chikkaballapur and Bengaluru Rural districts with treated-waste water generated in Bengaluru city.

The lift-irrigation project, which is estimated to cost Rs 883.54 crore, envisages filling 54 lakes in the two arid districts.

The project is intended to recharge the underground water, he said.
