<p>When a technical university comes up with a “technical snag” reason, there are reasons to worry.<br /><br />At least that is how one of the 28 students, who appeared for an MBA examination and failed but secured a pass certificate, viewed the problem.<br /><br />Gautam was pleasantly surprised to be given a pass certificate even though he had failed the examination conducted by the Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU). <br />Amazed at the turn of fortunes, though somewhat mystified, he wrote to Superintendent of Police Soniya Narang, submitting that his case and that of the other 27 students be thoroughly investigated.<br /><br />It was Gautam’s contention that the university authorities were up to no good and that irregularities had been committed in issuing the questionable certificates.<br /><br />Narang contacted the university and a subsequent probe suggested an online technical error on February 7 that led to 28 failed students passing the MBA examination with flying colours. Consequently, they were awarded degree certificates.<br /><br />But the mistake was set right immediately after Gautam approached the VTU and all the 28 certificates issued were withdrawn and the students were asked to surrender their certificates, according to VTU registrar K V A Balaji. <br /><br />He told Deccan Herald on Wednesday that online technical error in the first section of the inputs of the VTU that led to issue of certificates was set right the very next day.<br />“Errors are not unusual in online examinations. But the offline of the VTU verifies such mistakes and the errors are set right. This error has also been set right immediately,” he added.<br /><br />On action against persons responsible for the error, the registrar said the matter had been investigated and action had already been initiated. “It’s an internal matter of the university and cannot be elaborated,” he added.<br /><br />Narang, however, told Deccan Herald that following the university’s explanation and remedial action, no case was registered. <br /><br />Action against faux pas<br /><br />The VTU academic senate member Rajendra P Khataria here on Monday had said he would press for action against persons responsible for the faux pas, in the forthcoming meeting of the senate. <br /><br />With the VTU vice-chancellor H P Khincha’s term nearing completion, some vested interests have started a “political” campaign to get a candidate of their choice to be appointed new vice-chancellor, sources in the VTU claimed.<br /><br /></p>
