Scarcity of bamboo worries Meda families in Kadur

Off late shortage of bamboo  has been making  lives miserable leaving it huighly difficult to make their both ends meet.

About 43 Meda families here were weaving baskets and making other bamboo products to earn their livelihood. However, the Forest Department officials made their life miserable by preventing them from cutting bamboo.

Officials threaten the Medas of legal action and asked them not to cut bamboo.
“We have no experience in any other job. At the same time, we are not in a position to buy bamboo from other places as the rate will be high. We have no other source to earn money,” said Pakeeramma, a Meda woman. “Let officials give us permission to grow bamboo so that we can preserve the environment too. The district administration and the Forest Department officials should try to understand our problems, said Thimmaiah.
“We buy bamboo through auction from Malnad. After a whole day’s tedious work, what we earn is less than Rs 150 per day,” explains Satyamma.
