<p>Speaking after inaugurating 100 gobar gas units set up jointly by Zilla Panchayat, SKDRDP, Khadi and Rural Employment Commission and Vijaya Industries here at Balabhavana, he said “Kodagu is a hilly and forest region, where 50 per cent of families should make use of gobar gas. There is a need to start more gobar gas units in the district. NGOs should join hands with the government in creating an awareness on alternative source of energy. All of us should have information on the use of gobar gas.” <br /><br />Agriculture department Joint Director K R Krishnaiah said “the use of gobar gas is on decline in the recent times. Hence, it is essential to popularise the use of gobar gas as an alternative source of energy.” <br /><br />“Farmers should process the crops grown by them. They should also indulge in non agriculture activities like preparing plates from arecanut leaves, and setting up masala powder unit,” he added. Farmers should also engage themselves in dairy farming, poultry, piggery for economic empowerment, he suggested. SKDRDP Project Director A Srihari said “several gobar gas units have been set up Dakshina Kannada and Udupi district. In the similar way, more gobar gas units must be set up Kodagu district.” <br /><br />With proper maintenance, gobar gas can be utilised for longer period. <br /><br />SKDRDP has been giving emphasis to dairy farming, vermi compost unit and installation of solar lamps, Srihari added. <br /><br />Kapadiyara Girish of Vijaya Industries explained the use of gobar gas.
