Transport Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely said the minimum fare for autos will now be Rs 19 for the first two kms as against the current rate of Rs 10 for first  kilometre.

Subsequently, Rs 6.50 will be charged for every kilometre thereafter instead of current Rs 4.50.

Last time, the Delhi Government had effected a raise in the fares of autorickshaws and taxis in 2007.

Lovely said that while heeding to auto unions' demand for hike in fares, government has made it clear to them that permits will be cancelled if the autorickshaws fail to install Global Positioning System (GPS) in their vehicles within next six months.

"We have given the autorickshaw owners six months time to install GPS in their vehicles. It will help monitor the vehicles and also keep a tab on their movements. If any auto is found with no GPS after the six-month period, their permits will be cancelled immediately," he said.

The hike will pinch the pockets of the common man already reeling under high food inflation and hike in taxes and tariffs in the city.

"One more reason for hike in fare is to help autorickshaw owners install GPS so that all their activities as well as compliance with metre can be monitored," Lovely told a press conference, making it clear that any violation of norms or misbehaviour with commuters will be dealt with severely.

The Minister said the minimum fare for yellow and black taxis will go up from Rs 15 to Rs 20 for first one km while the rate will be Rs 11 instead of current Rs 8.50 for subsequent kilometre. However, Lovely said, no decision has been taken yet on the fare hike of radio taxis.

The new fares will come into effect from tomorrow after the government notifies the decision.

Justifying the hike, the minister said apart from hike in CNG prices, the annual maintenance cost of autos has gone gone up by 70 per cent in last four years while the CNG prices have gone by 66 per cent during this period.

The Minister said the government was strengthening the staff strength in its control room for autorickshaws and will also set up a call centre to monitor them. Lovely also said government will launch a new non-AC taxi service in which there will be flat rate of Rs 10 per kilometre.

Since it will take more than a week for the vehicles to correct the metres putting the new rates, drivers will be provided with fare charts.

Lovely said the Transport Department has sought the help of Traffic Police in reining in autorickshaw drivers who don't comply with metres or misbehave with passengers.
The CNG rate in Delhi has gone up by Rs 5.60 per kg - from Rs 21.90 to Rs 27.50 per kg
