"The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has decided to extend the Refund Banker Scheme to all over the country from August 1," a senior I-T officer said.

Earlier, the scheme was available in 15 cities of the country. The scheme was started four years ago, when it was introduced in Delhi and Patna.

The official said that all I-T refunds would be made through State Bank of India, as it is the refund banker for the department and tax payers are advised not to go to the tax department for refunds.

Under the scheme, I-T refunds are sent to the assessee by SBI, either through the electronic clearing service (ECS) mode or as paper refunds.

Tax payers should quote their MICR code and ten-digit bank account number while filing returns to avail the refund scheme. They should also list their complete communication address.
