Rasta roko, dharna, argument with Bescom officials mark protest against power cut
Farmers cry foul over unscheduled load shedding
DH News Service, Kolar/ Bangarpet:
Farmers staged a protest against power cut and held rasta roko in front of Bescom sub station in Tamaka and at Kolar-KGF checkpost on Tuesday.

At Kolar-KGF check post farmers arrived in large numbers at around 9 am and blocked traffic for four hours till 1 pm.

Hundreds of buses, lorries and other vehicles were stranded for nearly 2 km on Kolar-KGF and Bangalore-Andhra highways.

The protesters burnt tyres on the road and raised slogans against the government. Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa who took oath in the name of farmers is actually following anti-farmer policy, they alleged.

There has been no power for the last four days in the rural area and even drinking water supply is affected they alleged and said targeted Bescom officials as the reason for the power cut.

When Bescom officials arrived on the scene, well two hours after the rasta roko was held, the angry protesters started abusing them. They also insisted that senior Bescom officials should come from Kolar and the local officials had no other go but to return unsuccessful.

The local Bescom officials and the police tried for getting senior officials from Kolar but failed. They kept assuring the protesters that the officials would arrive any minute. However later they declared that the senior officials had gone to the protest spot at Tamaka.

At this point Ka Ra Ve local leaders and few farmer leaders warned that if action was not taken soon the officials and police would be responsible for the consequences.

The police, realising that the situation was going out of hand, persuaded the farmers assuring setting right irregular power supply within two days. The protesters called off the protest after  as to not to cause any more inconvenience to the general public, but after giving an ultimatum to the Bescom officials.

Tamaka: At Tamaka farmers from 13 villages staged a protest against irregular power supply in and around Harati and other villages, in front of Bescom sub station.

The power cut had badly affected drinking water supply and the villagers had gone without water for two days. EVen bore well pumps could not be operated. Also for the past two days the villages had gone back to dark ages.

Though good rains have resulted in most of the dams in the State full to the brim, and power generation is not hindered, the power crisis is the result of inexperienced BJP government which is failing in good administration, the protesters alleged. If the situation is not brought under control soon, things would go worst they feared.
Bescom senior official Chandra Naik arrived at the protest spot and immediately he was gheroed. The protesters called off the strike only after he assured restoration of proper power supply within the next 24 hours.

Harati Sampath Kumar, Narayanappa, Gopal, Suresh, district cooperative Union president Byalahalli M Govinda Gowda led the protest.

Protest turns political

The protest by farmers at Bangarpet soon turned political when several Congress leaders including CMC president Shamshuddeen, former president Parthasarathi and others joined the protesters and started raising slogans against the government.

Farmer leaders lawyer Nanjundappa, Byadabele Arun, B C Srinivasmurthy, Ka Ra Ve taluk president Kodandaramaiah,  JD(S) taluk youth president K C Gopal Congress leaders Jundanahalli Narayana Swamy, Kupanahalli Narayana Swamy, Manjunath, Satyanarayana  and others participated in the protest.
