Tamil film industry may have helped Shuba Punja gain recognition, but it is Sandalwood where she wants to make a mark. “I want to establish myself in this industry and as of now I’m satisfied with the kind of roles coming my way,” she says.
Speaking about her recent release Moggina Manasu, she says, “Director Shashank handled the women-oriented subject well. It is a sensitive story with a commercial touch, and I am happy with the response that the movie has got,” she adds.
So is she as sensitive as Renuka, whom she plays in the movie? “Yes I am.” So how is she braving this competitive industry then? “It is painful at times and I know it will only get harder in the coming days. But If I want to continue in this field, I’ll have to learn to live with it. I must however say that the industry teaches you to become strong.”
Shuba will be next seen in Slum Bala, which is slated for a September release. “I play the role of a bar singer in the movie. Shooting for this film was a different experience as I worked with a woman director. The comfort level was higher. It was more fun and we ended up gossiping!”
The lady has also signed Preeti Hungama with newcomer Vivek Raj. “The movie is a romantic comedy. It is very youthful and captures college life,” she reveals.
While work is coming her way, is there a particular kind of role that she would want to essay? “For me, script is of prime importance. Banner comes next. Also whatever the role, it should be performance-oriented. My ideal role however would be the one Arti portrayed in Ranganayaki.” But Shuba is quick to add that she is open to glamourous roles as well.
“As long as there is substance in the role and the scenes are shot aesthetically, I don’t mind the glam image. But in my experience, I’m sorry to say that this doesn’t happen.”
One project after the other, does she find time for herself at all. “There is no question of de-stressing as of now. It’s work and more work. If I’m not shooting, I’m improving my diction or watching movies to brush my skills. If anything, I’m the perfect example of all work and no play makes Jill a dumb girl!”
