He was speaking at a training programme for the career counsellors jointly organised by Mangalore University Career Guidance Cell and District Career Guidance Cell at SDM Law College here on Wednesday.
Though a section of students are successful in getting jobs, another section is finding it difficult to make into the profession of their choice. Hence, there are plans to establish career guidance centres in 20-25 government colleges of the district, he said.
Mr Rao said there was also a necessity of pondering over whether the colleges were doing their best in providing career guidance to students, in the backdrop of increasing job opportunities in the private sector.
In his address, SDM Law College Principal Dr B K Raveendra said there was a need to give career information not only to students but their parents as well, since the parents put a lot of pressure on their children unnecessarily. Students should have a vision for the future and a goal in life. But most of the youngsters are lacking them, he said.
There are several examples where students from poor economic background suffer from inferiority complex. There is a need to instill confidence in them, Dr Raveendra advised.
Mangalore University Economics Department Chairman Prof G V Joshi presided. The varsity career guidance centre head Prof A K Baradol, the district career guidance cell in-charge B T Salian, SDM Business Management College Principal Dr Devaraj were present.
