The BJP candidate defeated JD(S) candidate Sharada Puryanaik by a margin of 3777 votes.</p>.<p>In 2018, Shimoga Rural constituency had 211546 electors, including 105698 males and 105841 females.</p>.<p>The constituency had 7 third gender voters in 2018.</p>.<p>After the 2018 polls, JD(S) and Congress formed a coalition government with H D Kumaraswamy as the Chief Minister.</p>.<p>However, the coalition government collapsed in 2019 following resignations of 13 rebel Congress and JD(S) MLAs.
