Coronavirus news highlights: India's Covid-19 tally breaches 61 lakh cases; toll crosses 96,000

India's Covid-19 tally on Monday breached the 61-lakh mark, with the death toll crossing 96,000. Covid-19 cases in Mumbai crossed the grim 2-lakh mark with 50,000 new cases added in just 26 days. Delhi, on the other hand, recorded its lowest number in about a month with 1,984 new cases. States like Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Kerala saw a slight dip in their daily count while Rajasthan recorded its highest single-day spike yet. On the bright side, India's overall recovery rate has improved to 82.58% with the number of recoveries climbing to 50,16,520. Stay tuned for more updates.

Health ministry launches web portal for updates on Covid-19 vaccine development

The ''vaccine web portal'' and the ''National Clinical Registry for Covid-19'' have been developed by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and was launched by Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan, according to a health ministry statement.

Kerala to strictly enforce social distancing amid rise in Covid-19 cases, Opposition to keep off from stirs

The Opposition parties were earlier accused by the Chief Minister for staging stirs and gathering flouting Covid-19 social distance norms. Over 150 police personnel engaged for managing stirs and many party workers got infected. The BJP is also likely to keep off from stirs in view of the worsening Covid-19 scenario.

As the death count was more than 1,000 in each of the last 28 days in September, it is likely that the national toll would cross 1,00,000 by Thursday or Friday if a similar trend continues given that the toll currently is 96,000 plus.

The state government has decided to call an all-party meeting tomorrow to discuss the Covid-19 situation in the state. The meeting will be held via video conference, said Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan

The Chief Minister said that currently, the government is not considering a complete lockdown.

"Instead, steps will be taken to strictly follow the Covid-19 guidelines. All party meeting tomorrow will discuss in detail all issues regarding the increase in Covid-19 spread in the state," Vijayan added.
