Punjab CM asks AG to examine SC order staying farm laws

Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Tuesday asked the state Advocate General to examine in detail the Supreme Court order staying the new farm laws and called a meeting of his cabinet to discuss it, the CM's media advisor said.

Members of SC panel on agri laws pro-govt, won't appear before it: Farmer unions

Farmer unions protesting against the new agriculture-marketing laws Tuesday disapproved of the Supreme Court-appointed committee to break the deadlock over the acts, and said they will not appear before the panel and continue their agitation.

Addressing a press conference at Singhu Border here, Union leaders claimed the members of committee formed by the top court are "pro-government".

The Supreme Court earlier in the day stayed the implementation of the controversial farm laws till further orders and set up a four-member committee to resolve the impasse between the Centre and the farmer unions protesting at Delhi's borders over the legislations. (PTI)

Farming, farmers contributed immensely to development of country: President Kovind

President Ram Nath Kovind on Tuesday said farming and farmers have contributed immensely to the progress and development of the country.

Extending greetings to fellow citizens on the eve of Lohri, which is on Wednesday, Makar Sankranti, Pongal, Bhogali Bihu, Uttarayan and Poush Parva, on January 14, he said these festivals are an opportunity for the countrymen to honour the relentless hard work of the farmers.

These festivals are celebrated in different forms throughout India, but they all are associated with the joy and gaiety related to harvesting new crops, Kovind said. (PTI)

MSP system before new law to be maintained till further orders: SC

The apex court-appointed committee on three new farm laws shall hold its first sitting within 10 days in Delhi, says SC.

The Minimum Support Price (MSP) system in existence before the enactment of new farm laws shall be maintained until further orders, says SC. The top court added that no farmer shall be dispossessed or deprived of his title as a result of any action taken under new farm law.(PTI)

SC's stay on implementation of farm laws a positive step: NCP

The Supreme Court staying implementation of the three controversial new farm laws enacted by the Centre is a welcome and positive step in the right direction to get justice for farmers, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) said on Tuesday.

The apex court has stayed the implementation of the new farm laws till further orders and decided to set up a committee to resolve the impasse over them between the Centre and farmers' unions protesting at Delhi borders.

The Supreme Court Tuesday sought cooperation of protesting farmers at Delhi borders and said no power can prevent it from setting up a committee to resolve the impasse over controversial farm laws.

The observation of the bench asking protesting farmers bodies to cooperate assume significance in view of reports that they would not go to any apex court-appointed panel for resolution of disputes and wanted repeal of laws only. - PTI
