Former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi passes away

Gogoi, who served as Chief Minister for the third consecutive term till 2016 was tested positive for Covid-19 on August 25

Former Assam Chief Minister and veteran Congress leader Tarun Gogoi, who was in ventilation since Saturday due to post-Covid complications, breathed his last on Monday evening.

The 87-year-old Gogoi was put into complete life support on Monday morning after his organs stopped functioning. Gogoi was a member of Congress Working Committe.

Gogoi, who served as Chief Minister for three consecutive terms between 2001 to 2016, tested positive for Covid-19 on August 25. He was released from hospital two months later, but had to be hospitalised again due to post-Covid complications.

Born in Rangajan tea estate in Sivasagar district (now Jorhat) in 1934, Gogoi was elected to Lok Sabha six times, first from Jorhat (1971-85), and later from Kaliabor (1991-96 and 1998-2002). His son Gaurav Gogoi is now a Lok Sabha member from Kaliabor.

Gogoi also served as Union Minister of State for food processing under PV Narasimha Rao.

Thousands crowded GMCH since Monday morning which swelled after his death in the evening.
