Land or water, illegal structures built everywhere: BBMP finds 277 illegal structures built over waterbodies

The BBMP has identified 277 illegal religious structures, including those built on waterbodies, in compliance with a 2009 ruling of the Supreme Court to remove all places of worship constructed on public land.

East Zone has the most illegal religious structures (112) that came up after the court ruling, shows the data that the civic body submitted to the high court. RR Nagar comes next with 42 illegal religious structures followed by Mahadevapura at 36.

The BBMP has also discovered that even lake areas in all its eight zones were encroached upon to build illegal places of worship. It has identified 36 such structures built on lake premises or lake beds. The Sarakki Lake premises in South Bengaluru has most of them (13) that were built after the court ruling.
