<p class="title">A part of bridge-cum-barrage constructed across the Malaprabha river, between Sangolli village in Bailhongal taluk; and Bevinkoppa village in Kittur taluk got washed away by strong currents on Tuesday.</p>.<p class="bodytext">The river is in full flow as a consequence of heavy rains in Belagavi district. What remains of the barrage, is likely to get washed away subsequently, following increased inflow of water into the river.</p>.<p class="bodytext">Work on the bridge-cum-barrage was completed barely 18 months ago. But they were of sub-standard quality. So, the bridge could not withstand the onslaught of the rapid currents. </p>.<p class="bodytext">Karnataka Neeravari Nigam Limited (KNNL) Bailhongal subdivision implemented the works.</p>.<p class="bodytext">Catchment areas of river Malaprabha received heavy rains on Saturday night and Sunday also. This led to a rise in the water levels in the river. The new bridge-cum-barrage could not bear the pressure of the water. </p>.<p class="bodytext">Officials of KNNL were not available for comment.</p>
