AAP’s victory in the Delhi municipal polls is likely to further redraw the political landscape of the national capital as the BJP once again failed to blunt the Arvind Kejriwal-led party’s surge while the Congress almost took its last step into irrelevance in the city which it once ruled.

. The Aam Aadmi Party has put an end to the BJP's 15-year rule at the Delhi Municipal Corporation as the party secured majority votes in the elections.

According to figures available at 13:55 pm, the AAP has won 126 seats, the half-way mark, and was ahead in 8, totalling up to 134. The MCD has 250 wards, and the simple majority mark is 126.

The BJP, which exit polls predicted to suffer a massive defeat, put up a spirited fight, winning 97 wards and leading in 6.

. AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh said the barely 10-year-old party has "defeated" the largest party of the country (BJP) in their stronghold. "The results have once again proved the AAP is a hardcore honest party."Singh also said the results were remarkable considering the BJP had gone all guns blazing, deploying all top leaders, including 17 central ministers, for election campaign.

. According to figures available at 13:09 pm, the AAP has won 112 seats and was ahead in 20, totalling up to 132. . Addressing the media at the party headquarters, spokesperson Sanjeev Jha said that the Mayor will be from AAP.

"The BJP had covered Delhi in garbage, it'll be cleaned and Arvind Kejriwal's government will be formed in MCD. People of Delhi had decided to bring AAP in MCD so that Delhi become clean and beautiful," he said.

. Earlier in the day, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday held a meeting with his deputy Manish Sisodia and other senior AAP leaders, at his residence. Also in attendance were senior party leader Raghav Chaddha, as well as Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.

. The mood at the AAP office here was celebratory with loudspeakers blaring patriotic songs and the entire premises decked up with colourful balloons.

AAP workers, nervous but hopeful, had their eyes glued to LED screens throwing the latest counting trends. They are also keeping a tab on social media and some of them were seen constantly tweeting as the final touches were being given to the office for celebrating what could be the party's first victory in municipal polls here.

" AAP hi aayegi MCD mein is baar humko bharosa hai (We are confident the AAP will win this MCD poll)," said a party worker blowing blue and yellow balloons at the office.

. The latest results and trends show the Aam Aadmi Party has crossed the magic figure of 126 in the MCD polls, but the lead over the BJP was just marginal.

According to figures available at 12 noon, the AAP has won 82 seats and was ahead in 54, totalling up to 136. The BJP on the other hand has won 62 and was leading in 39, adding up to 101.

The Congress on the other hand was lagging far behind, winning just four seats and leading in six.

The MCD has 250 wards, and the simple majority mark is 126.

Independent candidate Shakeela Begum has won the Seelampur seat in northeast Delhi.

. As the trends show a tough fight between the AAP and the BJP in the Delhi civic polls results on Wednesday, the BJP maintained that it will get the numbers in the end.

Ajay Sehrawat, Delhi BJP Spokesperson, while speaking to IANS , said, "The actual results are disagreeing with the exit polls. Trends are going in our favour. AAP, which was claiming to win till today morning is getting their answers and we are confident to win MCD."

"We will not pre-celebrate like Kejriwal and his party. We are confident, we are winning, but still we will wait for the actual numbers and than we will celebrate." ( IANS )

. The Aam Aadmi Party has won 71 MCD seats, the BJP 54 and the Congress four, according to the latest State Election Commission update, as the counting of votes continues at 42 centres across Delhi.

The update around 11.45am also showed Independent candidate Shakila winning the Seelampur ward, while the Congress' Shagufta Chaudhary won Chauhan Banger.

. The latest trends in the MCD elections show the Aam Aadmi Party just edging past the BJP. The AAP has so far won 39 seats, while the BJP has bagged 35.

The counting of votes polled in the December 4 MCD elections commenced at 8 am Wednesday at 42 counting centres across Delhi amid tight security.

Sultana Abad of the AAP won the Jama Masjid ward, while the party's Sarika Chaudhary defeated Congress' Farhad Suri by a margin of 244 votes in the Daryaganj seat.

The BJP's Alka Raghav emerged victorious in Laxmi Nagar by a margin of 3,819 votes, while the party's Rohini D candidate Smita also registered a win.

The AAP's Ankush Narang has won from the Ranjeet Nagar seat.

. Kejriwal-led party is now leading in 109 seats while the saffron party is ahead in105 seats.

. The high-stakes election to the 250 wards of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) was held on December 4, sealing the electoral fate of 1,349 candidates in voting machines. A voter turnout of 50.48 per cent was registered in the elections.

. Delhi BJP vice-president Virendra Sachdeva said it is going to be a tough contest. "However, we will prove the exit polls wrong and the BJP will come to power in the MCD for a fourth consecutive term," he told PTI .

. AAP chief spokesperson Saurabh Bharadwaj told reporters, "The trends will change and we will emerge victorious in more than 180 seats. We have decked up our office and as soon as trends change we will celebrate. The BJP did not cite any achievement of their 15-year tenure in the MCD during the campaigning."

. The Aam Aadmi Party exuded confidence it will emerge victorious by winning more than 180 of the total 250 seats in the MCD polls, even though initial trends put the BJP in the lead.

Early trends showed the BJP was ahead in 106 seats while the AAP was leading in 78. The Congress was a distant third with lead in 10 seats.

. As per the latest official trends,BJP is leading in 66 seats, AAP in 30 and Congress in 3 seats.

. TheAAP has now widenedits lead and is now leading in 70 wards, while theBJP is ahead in 42 seats.

. As of 8.20 am, the initial trends show that AAP is leading is 25 wards, while the BJP is ahead in 17 wards and Congress in 5.

. The MCD's primary functions are the same as those of other corporations across the country. It runs hospitals and dispensaries, manages the water supply and drainage system, maintains markets, parks and parking lots, oversees the construction and maintenance of roads and over-bridges, handles waste management and street lighting, runs primary schools, operates tax collection, runs cremation grounds, and maintains the records of citizens' births and deaths.

Many of these functions, however, overlap with the Delhi government. For instance, the Delhi government and the MCD both oversee the construction and maintenance of roads in the national capital. The roads that are more than 60 feet wide usually come under the government, while the narrower ones are under the MCD.

Additionally, the MCD and the Delhi government are both involved in education in the capital. The MCD runs primary schools, while the Delhi government provides schooling for children in other grades, which include high school. College education is also handled by the Delhi government.

In the health sector, the MCD runs dispensaries and some hospitals, while the Delhi government runs larger and more specialised hospitals.

The MCD also gets monetary grants, including a share of taxes, from both the Centre and the Delhi government.

. One of the main reasons is the size of the corporation. With an estimated 1.1 crore people living under its jurisdiction, the MCD is among the largest civic bodies in the world. It comes second after the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, which oversees an estimated 1.4 crore people in Tokyo's villages, towns, cities and special wards.

. In the 2017 civic election, the BJP had won 181 of the 270 wards. Polling could not be held on two seats due to the death of candidates. The AAP had won 48 wards and the Congress 27. The voting percentage that year was around 53.

. Authorities here are all geared up for the counting of votes polled in the Delhi municipal elections, with officials saying 42 centres have ben set up for the Wednesday exercise which will begin at 8 am amid tight security.

Delhi recorded a voter turnout of 50.48 per cent in the keenly-watched polls held on December 4, results of which may have ramifications beyond the national capital.

The election was largely touted as a three-way contest among a spirited AAP, a confident BJP and a hopeful Congress.
