France: China's Li Yuehong won gold in the men's 25 metres rapid fire pistol event at the Paris Olympics on Monday with South Korea's Cho Yeong-jae taking silver and China's Wang Xinjie the bronze.

It was a China one-two in the qualification round and the trend continued as Li and Wang started off with a perfect five-from-five in the final.

Cho managed to sandwich himself between the Chinese pair but Li ran away with the gold, scoring 32 points for a comfortable win against the South Korean, who scored 25.

A perfect sixth series earned Li a two-point lead and the 34-year-old capitalised on it to win his first Olympic gold after winning bronze in the last two Games.

Compatriot Wang beat Germany's Florian Peter in a shoot-off to make the medal round.

ATHLETICS | Kiran Pahal finishes 7th in her 400m heat, will run in repechage round for a spot in semifinals

Paris: India's Kiran Pahal failed to book an automatic semifinal spot in women's 400m after finishing seventh in her heat race of the Paris Olympics on Monday and she will now run in repechage round.

Kiran, who turned 24 on Monday, clocked 52.51 seconds which was well below her season's and personal best of 50.92 seconds.

World champion Marileidy Paulino of Dominica won the heat with a time of 49.42, followed by Aaliyah Butler (50.52) of USA and Susanne Gogl-Walli (50.67) of Austria.

Top three in each of the six heats advanced to semifinal. All the others -- except for DNS (Did Not Start), DNF (Did Not Finish) and DQ (Disqualified)-- moved to the repechage round to be held on Tuesday.

Pahal had made direct qualification to Paris Olympics after clocking her personal best of 50.92 seconds in the National Inter-State Championships in June,

A repechage round was introduced in Paris Olympics to all individual track events from 200m to 1500m, including the hurdles events. The new format replaced the earlier one where some athletes advanced to the semifinals through fastest times in addition to the top placings in the first round heats.

Instead, only the athletes in the top placings will get automatic qualification and all the remaining will get a second chance to qualify for the semi-finals by participating in repechage heats.

SHOOTING | Maheshwari-Naruka qualify for bronze medal round in Skeet Mixed Team Event

Chateauroux: Indian shooters Maheshwari Chauhan and Anant Jeet Singh Naruka made the bronze medal round in the skeet mixed team event at the Paris Olympics here on Monday.

The Indian duo aggregated 146 in the qualifications and will lock horns with China for the bronze medal.

The Indian pair was placed tied second with a score of 49 after the first stage in the qualification, sharing the position with Australia, Korea, France and two Italian teams.

Anant Jeet Singh Naruka scored 25/25 in the first round the qualification while Maheshwari Chauhan shot 24/25 to take India's total to 49.

In the second round, it was Maheshwari's turn to shoot a perfect 25 but Naruka missed two shots each in the 2nd and 5th series to tally 23, which gave them an aggregate score of 48.

In the third round, India got 49 with 25 for Maheshwari and 24 for Naruka.

ARTISTIC GYMNASTICS | China's Zou Jingyuan, known as the 'king of parallel bars', retains title

Paris: China's Zou Jingyuan handily beat his rivals to retain the Olympic parallel bars title on Monday, picking up his third medal of the Paris Games and giving his country a second gold in gymnastics.

The 26-year-old, nicknamed 'king of parallel bars' for his dominance on the apparatus, earned a staggering 16.200 points, head and shoulders above the rest.

Illia Kovtun took silver with 15.500, earning Ukraine their first podium finish in the sport in Paris. Japan's Shinnosuke Oka, who won gold in the team and all-around events, took the bronze with 15.300.

During a masterful routine, Zou kept his arms and legs fully extended and steady as a rock and he drew applause from Kovtun every time he nailed a difficult move.

After sticking his dismount, the three-times parallel bars world champion pumped his arms in the air, smiling broadly and embracing his teammate Zhang Boheng, who came in fourth.

With big names Simone Biles and Sunisa Lee up against her in Monday's balance beam final at the Paris Olympics, Alice D'Amato did not expect to walk away with gold.

The 21-year-old Italian moved securely and confidently through her routine, sticking her dismount and clapping with a smile to celebrate her strong performance.

On any other day, her clean exercise might not have been enough for the win but falls from Biles, Lee and other competitors paved the way for D'Amato's victory.

Polish speed climber Aleksandra Miroslaw beat her own world record twice in the women's speed climbing qualification round at the Paris Olympics on Monday.

Climbing 6.06 seconds in her second qualifying heat, Miroslaw beat her previous world record of 6.21 seconds set a few minutes earlier in her first heat.

"I just did my thing and I stayed focused and I'm very happy with that. During the preparation for the Olympics, we did a huge job and here are the results," Miroslaw told reporters.

Miroslaw had set her previous world record of 6.24 seconds at the International Federation of Sport Climbing European qualifier in Rome on Sept. 15, 2023.

Another Polish climber, Aleksandra Kalucka, will join Miroslaw in the quarter-finals after posting the third fastest time in qualifying, beating her personal best with a time of 6.389 seconds. (Reuters)
