Officials react as Biden moves to pull troops from Afghanistan by September 11

President Joe Biden said on Wednesday he will begin withdrawing US troops from Afghanistan to end America's longest war, rejecting calls to keep forces in place to help resolve that nation's grinding internal conflict.

In a White House speech, Biden set a deadline for withdrawing all 2,500 US troops in Afghanistan by September 11, exactly 20 years after the al Qaeda attacks on the United States that triggered the war. "We went to war with clear goals," Biden said. "We achieved those objectives."

"The Islamic Republic of Afghanistan respects the US decision and we will work with our US partners to ensure a smooth transition. As we move into the next phase in our partnership, we will continue to work with our US/NATO partners in the ongoing peace efforts. "The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan seeks the withdrawal of all foreign forces from our homeland on the date specified in the Doha Agreement. If the agreement is adhered to, a pathway to addressing the remaining issues will also be found. If the agreement is breached and foreign forces fail to exit our country on the specified date, problems will certainly be compounded and those whom failed to comply with the agreement will be held liable."
