Over 80 per cent applicants to Delhi University are from the capital and its neighbouring states, the state-wise admission data of the varsity has revealed.
This year, DU has received 2.9 lakh applications for admission into its undergraduate courses, with more than 1.34 lakh of those applying had studied in schools in Delhi-NCR alone.
After Delhi, the varsity has received maximum applicants from Uttar Pradesh and Haryana. While around 62,000 UP students have applied to DU this year, Haryana has sent 38,956 applicants to the university.
Rajasthan with a little more than 9,000 applicants is also among the top five states with maximum number of applicants, along with Bihar’s 14,000 applicants.
However, the DU has received lukewarm response from southern and northeastern states with only a few hundred students applying from each state.
Kerala with 841 applicants has the highest number of applicants from southern states, followed by Tamil Nadu 462, Telangana 404, Andhra Pradesh 270 and Karnataka 194.
Despite the perception that northeastern students come to DU in large numbers, 441 students from Arunachal Pradesh, 1,958 from Assam, 136 from Meghalaya, 1,464 from Manipur, 255 from Mizoram, 192 from Nagaland and 176 from Tripura made up for only a small fraction of total applicants.
According to the board-wise admission data provided by the varsity, the Central Board of Secondary Education alone gave 2,18,872 applicants to DU, while the regional boards of Rajasthan and Bihar sent 26,693 and 12,705 admission-seekers respectively.
Indian School Certificate added only 8,311 to DU’s applicants tally. This year, DU has received a record number of 2.9 lakh applications, nearly 10,000 more than last year for admission into its over 60 odd undergraduate colleges. The admission process is already underway.
