Delhi University has launched a mobile phone application that will help undergraduate applicants fill admission forms and pay the application fee.

The mobile app called ‘DU UG Admission 2014-15’ will also serve as a directory and mini prospectus for students.

“The five megabyte app will have all the information that students would require before filing their application,” DU media coordinator Malay Neerav said.

Once the app is downloaded, students will have ready access to information related to admission criteria and schedule, open days, college directory, courses and degrees, basis of selection, admission information centres and the four-year undergraduate programme even without connecting to the internet.

“All the information that is static in nature will be stored in the mobile once the application is downloaded,” Neerav said.

However, this new free application is only available for the Android platform. “Launching the app on other platforms is a costly proposition,” the creator of the app, Deputy Dean Students’ Welfare Gurpreet Singh Tuteja, said.

He said it took him a week to create the mobile app. “For the test run I relied on student volunteers. They chipped in with important suggestions,” Tuteja added.

When powered by the internet, the university officials say the app will keep students posted with important admission related notifications. It will help students navigate to the university and college websites for detailed information. “The app will have web address of the university and colleges,” Neerav said.

The university also plans to publish college cut-offs for admissions to undergraduate courses on the mobile app. And if students meet the cut-off requirement, they can locate colleges with the help of the app powered by Google Maps. The app will list out frequently asked questions related to admissions. For specific queries, students can also send SMS or email through the app.

“The office of the Dean of Students’ Welfare will promptly respond to queries,” Neerav said.

Those without Android cell phones can fill application forms on DU website.

For admission related queries, students can also seek information through the university helpline number 155215 or 011-27006900.
