Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) members called off their strike on its second day on Tuesday after getting a written assurances on some of their demands from the university officials.

“Most of the demands have been accepted, except few which have technicalities. On the demand for a reading room they said it will be constructed the moment they get space for it. The issue of examination and hostel fee hike is on hold as they will form a committee to review this demand,” said a member.

Around 15 students were on strike. According to the protesting students, the officials have asked for three months to come up with a solution for the demands raised by the union members.

Their demands included rolling back of examination and hostel fee which was recently hiked, setting up of an inquiry committee into fake admissions, deploying a security guard at DU’s railway reservation counter to ensure that students can use the facility properly, and uniform cycle rickshaw fares in the campus.

A senior official said, “As the demands are genuine, everything will be done to find a solution.

IGNOU protest

Over 200 students from 21 regular courses of IGNOU were on indefinite hunger strike since the last 20 days. According to a student, the vice chancellor had suddenly decided to end all the regular courses in Indira Gandhi National Open University.

“It so happened that despite this indefinite hunger strike since so many days, the VC did not come to meet us. So today we closed the main gate to have a word with the VC. He called police and all of us were detained,” said Ashish Sharma, student, IGNOU on Tuesday.

According to Sharma, directors from 14 departments also joined their protest. “There was a meeting with the police official and our VC, and he has agreed to revoke his decision and give a written assurance on that,” said Sharma. The students called it an abrupt decision on the VC’s part. However, a senior official from IGNOU said a meeting was held and some concrete decisions have been taken regarding the issue.
