South Africa crumble under pressure yet again

England completed a comprehensive win over South Africa then and kicked off the World Cup in the perfect possible manner. After the first innings, 311 did not seem enough but South Africa never really got going. de Kock looked like the only one who wanted to take the fight to England and he was supported for a while by Rassie van der Dussen.

The duo's fifty partnership will be the only positive for South Africa's batting as both of them got fifties. van der Dussen especially looked in good touch and showed no signs of nerves in his first WC game. For England, Jofra Archer breathed fire in his WC debut, making Amla retire hurt when his nasty bouncer hit the latter flush on the helmet. He did return later to bat but could not do much, getting only 13.

Woakes bowled well but did not have a wicket to show for it while the other English bowlers found their names on the wickets column as they exploited the slow nature of the pitch. South Africa have a lot to ponder over.

SA openers make their way out to the middle

We are back for the second innings as South Africa's openers, Amla and de Kock, walk out for the chase. The target is above 300 but it is not stiff by any means, if you go by recent trends. They have a tendency to choke but Du Plessis would want to prevent that today and get the WC campaign off to a good start. The pitch is slow so they'll have to adapt to it

England's batting fires partially

England ended up with 311 as four batsmen got fifties but none of them hung on till the end. Bairstow got out in the first over but Roy and Root had a great partnership, getting their fifties in quick succession but perished in the space of 3 balls. Morgan and Stokes then took over the mantle and hit a flurry of boundaries with some delightful shots.

Morgan got out soon after his fifty and the English innings fell apart after that as first Buttler and then Moeen Ali could not continue the momentum as Stokes fought a lone battle at one end. South Africa bowled a slew of slower balls as many of them stuck to the pitch. None of the English batsmen adapted to the pace and they paid the price for it.
