Long-time geologist Talat Ahmad has been appointed Vice Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia, the only minority Central university.
He had been serving as the VC of Kashmir University for the past three years. President Pranab Mukherjee, in his capacity as the Visitor of the university, made Ahmad’s appointment on Tuesday.
His appointment comes nine months after former Jamia vice chancellor Najeeb Jung took over as Delhi Lieutenant Governor.
Ahmad is an alumnus of Aligarh Muslim University, Jawaharlal Nehru University and University of Cambridge.
He joined the Department of Geology, University of Delhi as professor in October 2003 and later took over as the VC of Kashmir University in June 2011.
He began his career as a Junior Geologist with the Geological Survey of Indian and worked for 19 years as a scientist with Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, under DST, Dehradun.
Ahmad has over 65 research publications to his credit.
His distinctions include being a Fellow of the Indian National Science Academy, the Indian Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences.
