An 18-year-old construction labourer was found buried under the debris of an old building that collapsed in Old Delhi’s Chandni Mahal on Sunday evening.
Four others were injured in the accident and are undergoing treatment at a hospital where their condition is said to be out of danger.
The fire department had claimed that there was no report of any fatality till late Sunday. Police said Chandan Singh’s body was pulled out of the debris on Monday morning.
The four injured are being treated at Lok Nayak Hospital.
Police and fire department officials had thought they had rescued all the known occupants of the building by the wee hours of Monday.
However, the dead youth’s father Gulab Singh approached the rescuers on Monday claiming that his son had crossed the road beside which this building stood.
He had not returned home due to which the father suspected he could be buried inside. His worst fears came true when Chandan’s body was found inside.
The over a 100-year-old building contained few residents and had one shop on the ground floor. However, more possible casualties were averted as the dry fruit shop was closed on Sunday.
The fire department had received a call for help around 6.30 pm from Gali Prem Narayan where the dilapidated building was located. Six fire tenders were rushed in to rescue the residents.
