Police are looking afresh into the murder of a Padma Bhushan winning doctor six years ago after some people recently tried to grab a flat left behind by her in south Delhi's Vasant Kunj.
They are probing if the ‘land grabbers’ were involved in the murder of Dr Hemlata Gupta.
Some people on August 14 entered Gupta’s flat, which was locked since January 28, 1991 and claimed that it was their flat and Gupta had sold it to them.
Local residents informed police, who found two persons who claimed to own the flat.
One of the intruders, Kausalya Rani of Moti Nagar told police that she had bought the property from Gupta.
She had all relevant documents, including power of attorney and a cash receipt.
But there was another person, Ramnik Agarwal of Jalandhar, who was also present along with five persons.
He claimed that he too had bought the flat from Gupta.
He told police that he came with the other people to get the flat cleaned and found Rani in the house.
Police were shocked to find two persons claiming the same flat.
Police found that all the documents they showed were forged and fabricated.
The original documents of the flat were kept with Prasad Nagar police station.
Police were also shocked to know that six years after Gupta was murdered, people have started coming to claim her flat.
Investigators are still clueless about the murderers and the motive.
Police have now started probing the miscreants who made the forged documents.
The case so far
Hemlata Gupta, 62, was found with her hands tied, mouth gagged and throat slit at her house in central Delhi’s Prasad Nagar on May 13, 2006.
A couple who was treated by Gupta found the body when they visited her house.
Investigations in 2006 ruled out robbery as the motive behind the murder.
Police had found jewellery and cash worth Rs 60,000 in her bedroom untouched.
Lived alone
Gupta, a former director and head of medicine at Lady Hardinge Medical College, was unmarried and lived alone in the flat after the death of her father and sister.
Gupta bought a DDA flat on January 28, 1991 at Vasant Kunj and since then, the flat was locked as she was living in Prasad Nagar. She did not leave any will before she was killed.
Now, investigators have started probing the role of property dealers into the murder of Gupta.
