The song, 'Manikya Malaraya Poovi', which made Priya Varrier an overnight internet sensation, has come under fire from multiple Islamic seminaries, who have deried the song for insulting their religious sentiments.

A Hyderabad-based Islamic seminary on Thursday issued a fatwa seeking the removal of a controversial song titled "Manikya Malaraya Poovi" from Malayalam film Oru Adaar Love.

Darul Ifta Jamia Nizamia from Shibli Gunj in its fatwa released on Thursday took strong objection to the "objectionable references" in the song. "Our objection is not for the film, but a song that references the Prophet and his wife. The director should have used Laila Majnu or Shirin and Farhad to depict the love. Why should he take the name of the Prophet? That is why we issued this fatwa seeking that the song be dropped from the film," Jamia Nizamia secretary Ahmed Ali told media.

The seminary urged the Telangana government and the police to make sure that the Malayalam film doesn't get released with the song and that the footage of the song be removed from YouTube. The song, Manikya Malaraya Poovi, featuring Priya Prakash Varrier, has become a social media sensation in no time. The song has Varrier winking at co-actor which made her a heartthrob of millions.

The fatwa was issued against the backdrop of some Muslim youths from old city lodging a complaint with the Falaknuma police on Wednesday stating that the song had hurt their religious sentiments. The police had registered an FIR against the filmmakers under Section 295 A of Indian Penal Code (deliberately hurting the religious sentiments of a class).
