Yesterday, Brigadier (retd.) Kapil Mohan, the man renouned for the creation of the Old Monk rum, passed away at the age of 88.

Despite giving India and the world the legendary dark rum, Mohan himself was a teetotaller, a person who never drank alcohol. He was also the recipient of the Padma Shri in 2010 for his contributions to trade & industry.

Mohan had launched Old Monk in December 1954 and since then, the rum, produced in Ghaziabad, had ruled the rum charts the world over until McDowell's managed to trump it. Today, the brand still commands a sizeable fan following, with sheer word-of-mouth sustaining the brand to this day.

To say their goodbyes to the man who made the rum, Twitter users came together to show off their drinks and share their favourite moments with the dark drink.
