The country’s biggest national flag was unfurled by President Pratibha Patil on Wednesday at Brahma Sarovar in Kurukshetra district of Haryana.
The flag is mounted on a 207 feet tall pole and is 90 feet in length and 60 feet width. The event was organised by the Flag Foundation of India.
The Foundation has earlier arranged such ceremonies at nine other places in the country. However, the dimensions of the flag in Kurukshetra are the largest. Such high rise flags have also been unfurled in Bangalore, Jaipur, Angul and Vijaynagar.
Member of Parliament Naveen Jindal who is also the president of Flag Foundation of India said the purpose of such ceremonies is to make people aware of the importance of the national flag and to inspire them to respect it.
This would infuse a sense of national pride in the people, he said. The foundation has spent Rs 81,000 on the flag and lakhs of rupees on the pole.
During her visit to Haryana, President Patil was also presented the smallest handwritten Gita in the world created by Sandeep Bhatt, a 31-year old youth from Ambala district. The world’s smallest Gita had entered the Limca Book of Records in 2005. The holy book is just 1.7 cm long and 1.5 cm wide.
The President was the chief guest at the convocation of Kurukshetra University.
