A 65-year-old man and his two sons have been arrested for thrashing two on-duty Delhi Traffic Police personnel in north-east Delhi’s Gokulpuri on Monday.
The injured have been identified as head constable Sanjay Bhagwan and constable Manoj. The attack was captured by a passer-by on his mobile phone, which helped police identify and nab the accused.
According to police, the policemen were attacked by over 15 men near Wazirabad Road in Gokulpuri at 9 am. “Sanjay and Manoj had seen two men riding a motorcycle without helmets. The motorcycle was signalled to stop, which also revealed that the driver was not carrying his driving licence,” said a police officer.
The two men were identified as 25-year-old Shahnawaz and his younger brother Amir, 18. A challan was issued, but Shahnawaz and Amir refused to pay. They had a heated argument during which Sanjay and Manoj were abused and threatened. After a while, Shahnawaz and Amir left without paying the challan.
It is alleged that Shahnawaz and Amir returned to the spot after 10 minutes with their father Sagir Ahmed and around a dozen men. They overpowered Sanjay and Manoj, and allegedly bragged about their clout in the area.
“The accused claimed that they rule the area and that the two policemen would not be allowed to leave the area alive,” the officer added. Sanjay and Manoj were then thrashed and their uniform was torn in the attack that lasted for four minutes. A call was made to the police control room, but the attackers had fled before police reached the spot.
Sanjay and Manoj were taken to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital, where they are undergoing treatment. Their condition is said to be serious. At the spot, a local informed police about the video of the attack on his mobile phone. Police also managed to get the address of the motorcycle on which the challan was issued by Sanjay and Manoj.
