E-way bill for intra-state movement of goods valued over Rs 50,000 will be applicable across India from the first week of June. After it was launched on April 1 for inter-state movement of goods, the electronic payment system for movement of goods over Rs 50,000 has covered a long distance.

“The government is planning to cover entire country with the system by the beginning of June,” a senior official said.

The latest to introduce the e-way bill system were Rajasthan and Assam which rolled it out on Sunday.

Under the Goods and Services Tax regime, the e-way bill is generated uniformally by all states on e-way bill portal, and is governed a same set of rules across the country.

The e-way bill system, which was aborted in February due to glitches in the system, is expected to enhance compliance among filers.

The government is also planning to check tax evasion by using vast sets of data generated by traders through electronic filing on the portal.

The government intends to check not only sales and purchases by traders through the e-way bill and data generated through it but also track movement of firms and their dealings with suspected companies, an official said.

The government is hoping that anti-evasion measures will boost its revenues.
