If you are a software engineer working at Intel's new campus in Bengaluru, you will be contributing to generating electricity every time when you walk into the swanky office.

Intel India's newly opened design house 'SRR4' at its 44-acre campus on Sarjapur Ring Road (SRR) has installed a walkway with energy harvesting tiles at the entrance of the building. Every time their employees step on the walkway, electricity will be generated.

Talking to Deccan Herald on the walkway, an Intel India official said the interactive walkway installation is enabled with Intel Architecture. The company opened the new office on Thursday.

"The flooring technology will convert the kinetic energy of visitors' footsteps into off-grid energy and data. It is part of our initiative to conserve energy and be a responsible company," he said.

The walkway, measuring 7.7 sq metres, will produce up to 4 joules of energy or up to 7 watts of continuous power with every footstep while a person walks on it. It will power a bright LED lighting display at the entrance of the building.

Another small display board will monitor footfalls and the energy generated. "The energy produced will be displayed on an intuitive dashboard with responsive graphics that create an interactive experience to users and customers," he said.

According to sources, the walkway energy technology is developed by Pavegen Systems for sustainable building and energy conservation.

The new building, constructed with an investment of Rs 1,100 crore, is equipped with IoT-based smart features. It avails renewable energy sources like solar and fuel cells for power generation, which is expected to meet 40% of the building’s power demand and reduce CO2 emissions by 37%.

Intel's global CEO Bob Swan inaugurated the new building on Thursday in the presence of Intel India President Nivruti Roy and Minister for Telecommunications Manoj Sinha.
