N S Vishwanathan, an Executive Director at the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), has been appointed new  Deputy Governor of the Central bank. He succeeds H R Khan, who is superannuating next week.

Appointments Committee of the Cabinet headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday cleared the appointment of Vishwanathan.

This is the first appointment at the Deputy Governor level which has been cleared by the Cabinet. Until now, the job was done by RBI and its Governor.

Vishwanathan was elevated as ED in 2014. His work involved overseeing banking and non-banking regulation departments. The notification on his appointment will come soon, sources said.
