The Government Film and Television Institute has opened admissions for two courses — a three-year, full- time Diploma in Cinematography and a Sound Recording and Engineering degree.
These courses were started in 1943 by Dr M Vishveshwariah, under the guidance of Shri Jayachamarajendra Wodeyar, the then Maharaja of Mysore, at S J Occupational Institute (later renamed as S J Polytechnic) at K R Circle, Bangalore, along with other specialised courses at a time when such courses were a rarity.
In 1996, under the World Bank scheme for Technician Development in Karnataka, the Government Film and Television Institute was started in Hesarghatta over an area of 25 acres.
The Cinematography course covers subjects such as still photography, videography and motion-picture photography, lighting techniques, visual composition, film processing, electronic cinematography and editing.
Under the Sound Recording and Engineering course, recording techniques of audio, architectural acoustics, communication engineering, radio broadcast, digital recording of sound, studio designing, sound designing, music lab, among others, will be taught.
The institute offers state- of- the-art technology, complete with a Studer-928 analog audio console, a rock-and-roll projector, digital recorder, sync recorder, digital cameras, special-effects generators, vision mixer, an arriflex III camera, and Arri-535 B movie cameras.
On completion of the course, students may seek work as cinematographers, DOPs in movie-making and can also opt for various creative jobs in advertising, documentary filmmaking, short-filmmaking, sports coverage, forensic, fashion photography, etc.
Sound engineer graduates can seek work opportunities as acoustic engineers, sound designers, radio broadcast engineers, television broadcast engineers, installation engineers, service engineers, technical executives in production control rooms, etc.
