Navjot Sidhu a hero, will remain so: Wife

With the Congress likely to announce its CM face for the Punjab Assembly polls on February 6, state party president Navjot Singh Sidhu's wife on Thursday said it doesn’t matter who becomes the CM, her husband will remain a hero.

“Whoever the CM may be, it does not matter,” Navjot Kaur Sidhu said.

“Navjot Singh Sidhu is a hero and he will remain a hero,” she said while talking to reporters in Amritsar. (PTI)

4984 cases pending against MPs, MLAs of which 1899 cases more than five yrs old: SC told

A total of 4,984 cases are pending against Members of Parliament and Members of Legislative Assembly/Council out of which 1899 cases are more than five years old, the Supreme Court was told on Thursday.

In his latest report, senior advocate Vijay Hansaria, appointed as amicus curiae, told the top court that it may be noted that the total number of cases pending as of December 2018 was 4110; and as of October 2020 were 4859. (PTI)

Refrain from predicting poll results during prohibition period: PCI to print media

Ahead of the assembly polls in five states, the Press Council of India (PCI) on Thursday asked print media to refrain from publishing articles that in any way predict the results of the elections during the prohibited period from February 10 to March 7.

In view of the upcoming assembly elections in five states, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has imposed a ban on conducting and publishing opinion polls or exit polls between February 10 and March 7. (PTI)

Followers of Ambedkar should join SP to oust BJP from power: Akhilesh

Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav on Thursday said followers of Dalit icon Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar should join the party’s effort to oust the BJP from power so that democracy could be saved and people’s rights protected.

Yadav said this during a joint press conference with Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) president Jayant Chaudhary when asked about BSP leader Mayawati, whose party had contested the 2019 Lok Sabha polls in alliance with the Samajwadi Party (SP).

"Ambedkarwadi (followers of Ambdekar) should come with 'samajwadis' (socialists) as we have to save the Constitution and democracy. If these are not saved, just think what will happen to our rights," Yadav said.

Yadav said his outfit has the support of different parties representing varied sections of society.(PTI)

SC to hear on February 25 review plea in 1988 road rage case against Sidhu

The Supreme Court Thursday said it would consider on February 25 the plea seeking review of the sentence awarded by it to cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu in an over 32-year-old road rage case.

The matter came up for hearing before a bench of Justices A M Khanwilkar and S K Kaul which posted it for hearing on February 25 in view of the letter circulated by Sidhu’s counsel seeking an adjournment. (PTI)
